Jenna Flowers (L) and Jessica Cuff.Jessica Cuff will be the first to tell you she thinks the cupcakes she and sister Jenna Flowers bake at The Coffee Shop at Agritopia (which they co-own with their parents Steve and Jeanne Flowers and Jessica’s husband Curt ) are as yummy as any cupcakes she’s eaten anywhere.
And she’s been everywhere to check out the competition, including the iconic Magnolia Bakery in Greenwich Village. Now her boast has been put to the test.
This past March, the sisters teamed up and went to LA to compete in “Cupcake Wars,” a reality cooking show on the Food Network that begins its second season June 13.

Competitors are sworn to secrecy regarding the outcome, but viewers can watch Jessica and Jenna sweating it out as they bake 1,000 cupcakes (250 of four different types) in three hours on the episode that is tentatively schedule to air on June 29.
Jessica compares the experience to “an anxiety attack on crack,” explaining that four days of prepping, baking and taping were super-stressful but very exciting, especially since they were taping in the same studio where Kiefer Sutherland was filming “24.”
The competition has three rounds, with one team eliminated each round. Cupcakes are judged on taste, presentation and creativity. Down the line, the winning team will show off their cupcakes on an episode of Ace of Cakes, a popular Food Network program hosted by Duff Goldman.
The whole crazy ordeal was initiated by Jessica, who was reading a cupcake blog in the middle of the night “to see if people were out-cupcaking me” when she found information about the upcoming contest. She sent the Food Network an edgy introductory video plus an online portfolio and photos of The Coffee Shop, including some semi-sexy pictures of the sisters themselves, holding plates of cupcakes while perched atop Vespas.
    It worked.
Watch the show or be your own judge. Cupcakes are available every day but Sunday at the shop.
Details: The Coffee Shop at Agritopia, 3000 E. Ray Road, Gilbert. 480-279-3144, thecoffeeshopaz.com.
